WHY OCEAN VISIONS

THE OCEAN IS CENTRAL TO CLIMATE ACTION

Climate disruption is the top threat to ocean health. Greenhouse gas pollution and loss of planetary reflectivity together are disrupting the climate and driving ocean overheating and acidification—devastating marine life and diminishing the ocean’s ability to support humanity. There can be no healthy ocean without stopping climate disruption, and the climate cannot recover without the ocean.

OUR APPROACH

SLOW, STOP AND REVERSE THE OCEAN-CLIMATE CRISIS

Ocean Visions works on four interconnected strategic priorities—Reduce, Remove, Repair, and Reach—to directly address the causes and impacts of climate disruption to the ocean.

Reduce

Reduce

Reduce

We advance societal decarbonization via ocean-based pathways for low carbon energy, food, and biomaterials. Activities include:

  • Support development and expansion of ocean-based technologies that replace carbon-intensive goods and services needed by society in Europe and beyond
  • Convene European institutions and stakeholders to advance knowledge and collaboration on ocean-based pathways to net zero and beyond

Remove

Reduce

Reduce

We advance responsible marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR), first through research and development and later, if and as appropriate, though deployment. Activities include:

  • Facilitate research, evaluation, and responsible testing of marine carbon dioxide removal approaches
  • Develop and share environmental impact assessment frameworks and site-suitability tools
  • Build knowledge products and networks that help connect European researchers and institutions to the global mCDR ecosystem

Repair

Repair

Repair

We advance research on new approaches to rebuild and restore critical marine ecosystems in order to avoid earth system tipping points. Activities include:

  • Support collaborative research on the restoration of critical marine ecosystems, with a current focus on Arctic sea ice
  • Fund or co-fund targeted research projects addressing climate-driven ecosystem loss
  • Publish and disseminate findings to inform policy and further research in Europe

Reach

Repair

Repair

We build a European community of practice to accelerate testing and development of ocean-climate solutions. Activities include:

  • Organize and support events, workshops, and webinars for the European ocean-climate community
  • Produce and share publications, stories, and educational resources on ocean-climate solutions
  • Participate in and help host convenings such as the Ocean Visions Biennial Summit
